The Performance Of An X-Ray 2024
Interested in medicine and the arts, Marianna seeks to explore this relationship within this
project, bringing two separate worlds together. The work explores the relationship between
medicine and specifically performance, and how these are seen in Radiology. Explicitly the
positionality patients are placed into to be X-rayed. These two subjects may seem worlds
apart, however they are more closely related than first anticipated. The medical
professional, like a performer, is forced into memorization and preparation, spending
hours in a clinical setting acting like a rehearsal space. They must connect with their
patients, keep their attention and remain vigilant, building a relationship of trust. This in
turn the medical professional acts as a conducer, telling the patient how to move, in
response the patient must then perform these precise movements with their bodies. The
work consists of 3 parts, prints, a photobook and a video projection. These three elements
work together to portray all aspects related to medicine and performance. The photobook
reflects the sterile and clinical notions related to medicine depicting how the body would
look when placed in these positions through the use of diptychs and triptychs revealing the
different x-ray views, this is accompanied by text displaying one side of a conversation,
instructions to how the patient should move. Meanwhile the projection shows the
movements in real time, depicting the performative aspect of medicine. In this projection
you see people perform specific movements related to the clinical views used in X-ray
positioning, these movements are delicate and precise.
